The days were cold and the nights were long.
My empty belly moaned and my thoughts did sink.
I met a man in a long black coat
who promised women, warmth, and drink.

"I know a town a few miles to the west,"
the old man told me with a coyote grin.
"They'll give us wine and a place to rest.
They'll treat us well, they'll take us in.
And no one needs to know where we have been."

I will find a way to bring us back together.
Night will become day when Raven steals the moon.

Along the way the old man said to me,
"This town is wealthy beyond its people's needs.
They hide some secret treasure in a box.
Some say it holds the moon's very seed."

The road was long but hunger drove our pace,
and we reached the town in time for such a feast.
They took us in and treated us like kin.
The sun set red and darkness took the east,
and the greed within my heart was soon released.

I will find a way to bring us all together.
Night will become day when Raven steals the moon.

The raven sang so sweetly to me,
and fool I was, I could not see.
Such a folly to behold,
"to reap where we never sowed." (-Thoreau)

We waited for our hosts to fall to sleep,
then took our bounty and we fell to sin.
The box was heavy and my companion weak,
so I agreed to take the load for him.

We stopped to rest our weary soles awhile,
but we could wait no longer to see our prize.
I opened up the box and the world went black.
Now you may doubt, but friend, I tell no lie.
The moon had vanished from the very sky.
